Molly genus 4/02/10

Platy <  Molly

No. They are difference Genus. Further, they are different Species. They are just in the same Family.

(Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species)

So a molly is not a platy and visa versa. They cannot even interbreed.

Note: The Molly and Guppy can actually produce a cross, because they are in the same genus but different species, and closely related enough to produce the occasionally offspring. Even more common a Platy and a Swordtail can cross and produce offspring, again same genus and closely related species, but they are all still different fish.

Now, Goldfish are all the same species, just different mutations.

Poecilia is a genus of euryhaline brackish water fish in family Poeciliidae of order Cyprinodontiformes.[1] The type species is P. vivipara. Live-bearers, the Poecilia species are collectively known as mollies, with the exception of Endler's livebearer (P. wingei) and the famous guppy (P. reticulata). Members of this genus are members of the family Poecilidae, which includes the southern platyfish or "platy" (Xiphophorus maculatus), and the green swordtail (X. hellerii).

pond herons 05-22-10

How do i stop a heron emptying my pond?

by putting a low fence all the way round the pond. Just one of those wire fences sold on a roll that you stick into the ground. It is only just over a foot high. The plants around the pond will cover and grow through it it but herons will not cross it. It still allows access for all my frogs and toads to get in and out as well.

pond fish floaters 07-16-10

floaters

Fish floating upside down. This indicates a condition know as swim bladder disorder or flip over. This condition is common in round bodied goldfish. The swim bladder is actually two small bags of air inside the goldfish that when working properly gives the fish neutral buoyancy in the water. To control the amount of air in the swim bladder there is a duct (called the stom) that attaches the swim bladder to the esophagus. This allows air to be released from the swim bladder through the esophagus. The problem occurs when the stom becomes blocked or damaged. This damage can be from chronic digestive problems, internal parasites, bacterial pathogens, or a mass such as a tumor pressing on the stom that prevents air from being vented from the swim bladder through the esophagus. Also, chronic high nitrates have been identified as causing damage to the stom. Which leads to the fish floating.

Treatment: When floating is first noted stop feeding for 3 days then feed frozen peas that have been defrosted and shelled. This will help clean out the digestive system. If floating continues then pre-soak pelleted food in a container with 1 ounce water and a pinch of Epsom Salts. Soak for 10-15 minutes then discard the solution and feed the pellets. Try this only once or twice as regular ingestion of Epsom Salts will harm the fish's digestive system.

These methods work in the early stages of digestive related floating and can help control the floating to allow the fish to live a reasonably normal life. Once a fish begins to float upside down a good percentage of the time or all the time then it may be the beginning of the end. Goldfish really can't eat and digest food properly when upside down all the time and they will eventually become weak and susceptible to parasites or bacterial pathogens. It's time to consider the humane choice of euthanizing the fish.

As of this writing there is some research and surgery being performed to correct floating caused by swim bladder problems. This work is being done by Dr. Erik Johnson in Marietta, Georgia. For more information on the surgery and flipover: http://www.koivet.com/flipover/

mollys facts 3-29-10

*Mollies sometimes lay eggs during birth. in my experience they are all yellow, but i can imagine they can be greenish, too. Especially if you didn't notice them right away, their color could have changed a little. These eggs were either unfertalized during conception or died during development. they are not going to hatch, sadly.

*Female Mollies can supposedly store sperm for 5 or 6 months and become pregnant from it when they feel comfertable and unstressed. this can explain some of the mysterious pregnancies.

*While the female prepares to give birth, she might start to shake and sort of swim in place. this is a sign she is trying to go into labor, but she can actually start doing that a week or two before birth. this is a good sign to put her in a secluded area.

*BREEDER NET INFO: i have just purchased this AWESOME breeder container made by Marina. it is clear, and it has a section for the mother on the top and a section for the babies on the bottom. the mother gives birth and the babies fall down into the bottom chamber. it works EXCELLENTLY and i recommend it completely. it allows you to leave the mom in there without worrying about them becomeing snacks and with out worrying that she hasnt completed giving birth.

*you should keep the mother in the secluded area for at least 24 hours. my female balloon started having her babies at around 11:00 at night, and when i went to bed she had already had 32 fry and about 7 eggs. when i woke up at 7:00 in the morning, there werent any more babies. i just left her in there until night time to be sure.

*MALE OR FEMALE? females have three fins under their belly close to their tail that look similar to the ones that almost every fish have. the two fins that are paralell to each other Males have longer fins on their back and the fin under their tail is pointed and points backwards towards the rear tail. he may stick this fin towards females when he wants to mate.

*Mollies fo not need to be in brakish water. I believe they can be in either fresh, brakish or even salt water, but i am not entirely sure about the salt water. i know that they are supposed to do better in water with a little bit of salt, but my tank has no salt in it and my balloons are perfectly healthy.

If any one has any more questions you can type them in, i will check up on this website in a week or so. =D
